The goal of this operation was to produce top quality seed for planting. The seed included oats, barley, peas and possibly some similar size seeds.

A hopper or small box affair on the very top held the grain to be cleaned. A thin stream of grain came down onto an appropriate size screen which allowed the kernels to drop through to a smaller screen where they rattled down a slanting affair to an elevator to be bagged up. As the seed passed through the screen, a circular paddle wheel produced a blast of air to blow out any thrash and debris. Simultaniously vibrating screens allowed small weed seeds to drop into a special drawer to contain them for disposal. These machines were usually powered by a hand crank which operated eccentrics to make the screens vibrate back and forth and also the large paddle wheel produced a controlled air stream to blow out debris.
